Sony's finance chief believes the shortage of PlayStation 5 consoles will continue throughout 2022

According to an unofficial statement from Sony's finance chief, demand for PlayStation 5 consoles could be higher than production capacity in 2022.

The PlayStation 5 console has been hard to get at a regular price since launching at the end of 2020. There are orders and there are waiting lists, but if you order a console now you'll be lucky if it comes to you this year. And if you're hoping the situation will improve soon and stores will have enough consoles for everyone – don't get your hopes up because Sony isn't hoping for that either.

If the Bloomberg report is to be believed, Sony's finance chief Hiroki Totoki, speaking to analysts, said he expects the shortage of PlayStation 5 consoles to continue throughout 2022.

"I don't think the demand will calm down this year, and even if we secure more devices and next year we manage to increase production of the PlayStation 5, our stock will not be able to catch up with the search even then." – Totoki reportedly said.

It should be noted that this is just the opinion of one Sony employee and that this does not mean that it will actually be so. However, if the rush to consoles is already like that while it doesn't even have many games that can't be played elsewhere, you can think what the rush will be later, when some tempting games arrive.

The great frenzy of PlayStation 5 is only part of the reason why there is currently a shortage of these new consoles. Other causes can be found in the global shortage of computer chips (resulting from the growing trend of working from home), resellers who use this situation for profit, and the general delay in deliveries for various reasons.
