Microsoft has turned off its Cortana app for iOS and Android. It is the latest in a series of moves to end support for Cortana on multiple devices, including Microsoft's own Surface headset. The Cortana app for iOS and Android is no longer supported, and Microsoft has removed it from the App Store and Google Play Store.

"As we announced in Jul, we will soon discontinue support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS, while Cortana continues its evolution as a productivity assistant," Microsoft said in a support message spotted by MacRumors. "From 31 March 2021, the Cortana content you created – such as reminders and lists – will no longer work in the Cortana mobile app, but can still be accessed through Cortana in Windows." Reminders, lists, and tasks of Cortana are now available instead in the Microsoft To Do app, according to TheVerge.

Microsoft first introduced the Corathan app for iOS and Android in December 2015. The app was originally designed to connect Windows 10 computer and mobile phones. However, it failed to gain scope despite a major redesign. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recognized the company's difficulties in competing with other digital assistants a few years ago, finding that Microsoft no longer saw Cortana as a competitor to Alex and Google Assistant.

Microsoft once imagined a future full of Cortana-powered fridges, toasters and thermostats. That dream came to an end early this month when Cortana's first and only speaker was removed by Microsoft's digital assistant. Other devices like the Cortana-powered GLAS thermostat are also no longer powered by Microsoft's digital assistant.

Cortana, however, is not entirely finished. Microsoft continues to see value in conversational artificial intelligence, and the company is trying to refocus Cortana as an assistant that can improve Microsoft's enterprise-focused offering.
