The court case between Epic Games and Apple has spawned details of Epic's investment in exclusivity throughout 2020.

Epic Games boasted at the beginning of this year that it had attracted 160 million users to its Epic Games Store in its two years of existence. However, the results of game sales on this platform show that user spending is not high. So it's no surprise that epic games store has been doing business at a loss for the past two years – the first year they were down $181 million, and last year they went into the minus even deeper with $273 million in arrears.

The reason for this minus lies primarily because the games on the Epic Games Store do not buy an extremely large number of players – most of them are only there for the free games that Epic Games shares every week. But the loss-to-lose EES business is actually the expected thing for Epic Games, as their costs stem primarily from buying game exclusivity for the EESC.

According to information that appeared in the documents for the court case between Epic Games and Apple, epic spent about 444 million US dollars in 2020 so that individual games do not come out on Steam for at least a year, that is, that upon exit they are first available on the Epic Games Store. Apple's defense thus uses the argument that Epic Games attacks them because they take too much commission on appstore, and on the other hand they do business with losses in their store. In other words – it's ironic to them that Epic Games is calling for a reduction in commission from sales of games for developers, and their store isn't making a profit.

Of course, epic games store represents only one part of Epic's business. With earnings from Fortnite and unreal engine licensing, the company can withstand the losses it records year after year with its digital gaming store for PC.
