Google restores Compass to Google maps (Android OS)

    IC: GOOGLE

Google announced several new features for Google Maps earlier this week, but as it turns out, that's not all.

Android OS returns to one of the Google Maps features it removed a few years ago and which, since then, users have been pushing to return to. It's a compass, a tool originally available in Google Maps, but was removed by the parent company back in 2019.

Google claimed it decided to pull the compass from Google Maps on Android because it wanted to clean the navigation screen, although such an explanation doesn't make much sense since the feature exists on the iPhone all the time.

In an announcement this week, Google announced that the compass is returning to Android after community feedback.

The compass requires that you first run navigation to a specific location before it is displayed. So, in theory, all you have to do is start navigating Google maps on Android, and then the compass should be there again.

You have to have at least Google Maps version 10.62 to restore the compass, and of course, those with an iPhone can keep running the app as before, because there's no change happening on their devices.
