The original Xbox console was launched in 2002 with Xbox Live online service. For years, this service existed under this name, but now Microsoft has decided to rename it. Instead of an Xbox Live Network, the Xbox Network name will be used.
The Xbox network name refers to the core online gaming service on Xbox consoles and on Windows 10 OS. At Microsoft, they decided to rename the network to avoid confusing users with a subscription they call Xbox Live Gold. So Xbox Network is a basic service, while Xbox Live Gold is a subscription to online gaming on Xbox consoles, if that makes sense to you than before.
Contrary to some rumours, it seems the Xbox Live Gold subscription will remain alive until further notice. It will only change that a subscription will no longer be required to play free-to-play games in online multiplayer. But this has not yet taken effect and there is no precise date when it should be implemented.
